Time and again, we get asked the same question about making videos. How long should your real estate listing video be?

The easy answer is three minutes or less but what’s more important is that you are telling a visual story that keeps your viewer engaged. People will watch a 10-hour docuseries if it’s engaging but they will tune out of a 15-second video if you can’t hold their attention.

So, how do you do that?

Short clips (think four-five seconds), multiple angles and camera movement. These techniques will help you engage your viewer and keep them watching until the end.

One of the most frequent questions that we get asked about making real estate videos is, how long should your video be?

Well we have a simple answer that will help you engage more buyers and sellers.

The number one thing to remember when you’re creating a video to market your property, is to make sure that the video moves along at a good pace, otherwise you’re going to lose your viewers.

Two big mistakes that we see people make with their real estate videos is that the clips are too long and they don’t hook viewers in with the highlights of the home first.

Any time that you have a shot on the screen for more than four or five seconds, you run the risk of losing your viewer’s attention.

So you want keep their attention with lots of different shots and different angles.

If you wanted to spend more time in a particular room in the home, more than four to five seconds, you need to show more shots and more angles to make sure that you are holding your viewer’s attention.

The second big mistake that we see realtors make with their videos, is they’ll start filming as soon as they walk in the door.

They’re trying to do a walk-through of the property as opposed to leading with the highlights, but you wanna hook your viewer in, right?

So to do that, start with the highlights.

Ideally you want to tell a story about the home and grab your viewer’s attention
right from the beginning and keep them watching.

So now that you know to keep each clip to four to five seconds and hook in your viewer by showing them the highlights first, how long should your video be?

Ideally, a property listing video that you’re gonna share on social media, should be 90 seconds to two minutes long.

This is long enough to tell the viewer an engaging story about the property and hold their interest throughout.

On your website or listing, you’ll be able to hold their attention a little bit longer, but you should still keep it to about three minutes or less.

Remember, the goal of this video is to get interested and qualified buyers to want to see the property in person, and nothing does that better than an interesting video about that property.
